Ladies of Charity of the Dioceses of Buffalo

Ministries

Christmas

Eligible families with children and teens are referred by Catholic Charities. Members strive to make a difference by providing a new toy, books, and warm gloves and hats for over 4,500 area children at Christmas.

Homebound men and women receive a gift bag as part of our Shut-In Program. For many, our gift may be the only source of joy and recognition during the holiday season. Over 500 bags are prepared and delivered as part this ministry each year.

Fresh Start

Members, parishes, businesses, and friends donate new and gently-used household goods and small appliances for those who must set up housekeeping again due to circumstances such as fire or spousal abuse. In the course of a year, we assist over 700 individuals or families as they struggle to begin anew after facing serious difficulties.

Book Bags

New, grade-appropriate school supplies including a book bag or backpack, pencils, notebooks, and crayons are distributed to 300 area children prior to the beginning of each school year. Without our intervention, disadvantaged children would face the first day of class without the tools to succeed.

Reading Enrichment

Members meet monthly at a library, community center, or day care center to read to young children in a small group setting. Volunteers encourage discussion and foster language skills. Each child receives individual attention and encouragement, as well as a book to take home.

First Communion

Each year new clothing is provided for needy First Communicants in the Diocese of Buffalo. This outward sign of receiving the Eucharist for the first time includes a dress, or suit, tie, veil, underwear, and shoes. A referral system is used to identify children in need.

Scholarships

LOC offers multiple tuition incentives to students attending a Catholic high school with the Diocese.
